How God Establishes Our Steps

"He stooped down to lift me out of danger from the desolate pit I was in, out of the muddy mess I had fallen into. Now He's lifted me up into a firm, secure place and steadied me while I walk along His ascending path."

~ Psalm 40:2 (TPT)

"He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps."

~ Psalm 40:2 (NKJV)

Psalm 40:2 does not stop with God bringing David out of the pit. The verse continues by saying that God “set my feet upon a rock” and “established my steps.” That part matters because God’s work in our lives does not end at rescue alone. He does not simply pull people out of broken places and then leave them to figure out how to move forward on their own. He begins teaching them how to walk differently.

Many people know what it feels like to survive difficult seasons. They know what it feels like to live in fear, instability, confusion, or emotional exhaustion. When someone spends a long time in survival mode, instability can start feeling normal. Even after healing begins, it can still feel unfamiliar to walk in peace again.

Psalm 40 reveals an important truth about God's restoration process. God not only brought David out of the miry clay, but He also established his steps. The Hebrew word translated "established" is kun, which means to establish, make firm, prepare, or secure. The picture is one of stability and direction. David was no longer slipping on unstable ground. God was now giving him a firm foundation and guiding his path forward.

One of the beautiful truths found in this verse is that God cares about what comes after the rescue. Deliverance is not only about being rescued from something painful. God also cares about what comes afterward. He restores, rebuilds, strengthens, and begins guiding people into a new way of living. Many people cry out for rescue, but eventually God begins teaching them to walk in healing, wisdom, and dependence on Him.

Often, people become so accustomed to chaos that peace feels unfamiliar at first. Fear, worry, and survival thinking can influence decisions for years, even after circumstances begin to change. Yet God does not call His people to live in a constant state of fear, anxiety, or instability. Little by little, He teaches them to rest in His presence, trust His guidance, and walk in the peace that only He can provide.

Trusting God's direction becomes especially important after restoration begins. Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Those verses connect beautifully with Psalm 40:2. God not only rescues people from unstable places, but He also directs their steps afterward.

Walking with God often requires learning to slow down and trust His leading instead of reacting out of fear, emotion, or past pain. That process rarely happens overnight. Spiritual growth is usually a journey rather than a single moment. As we continue to seek Him, trust Him, and follow His direction, God faithfully establishes our steps one day at a time.

Healing often transforms more than a person's circumstances. It changes the way they walk through life. Someone who once lived in fear may slowly begin walking in peace. Someone who once felt trapped in shame may begin walking in freedom. Someone who once depended solely on their own strength may begin to depend on God in a deeper way.

David’s testimony reminds us that God does not waste the process. The same God who brings people out of the pit is also able to steady their steps afterward. He knows how to guide people through seasons of rebuilding. Even when the future feels uncertain, God remains faithful to lead one step at a time.

Sometimes people want God to reveal the entire path all at once, but often He simply gives enough grace for the next step. That is where trust begins to grow. Established steps are built through continued dependence on God.

Many of the greatest journeys of faith are not taken in giant leaps but in small acts of obedience. As we continue trusting God with each step, He faithfully leads us exactly where we need to go.

Psalm 40:2 reminds us that restoration is not only about where God brings us out from. It is also about where He begins leading us afterward. God still establishes steps. He still gives direction to those who feel uncertain. He still steadies lives that once felt unstable. No matter how unclear the future may seem, God remains faithful to guide His people forward. He may not reveal every step at once, but He always provides enough grace for the next one.
