When Life Feels Like Miry Clay: Finding Stability in God

"He stooped down to lift me out of danger from the desolate pit I was in, out of the muddy mess I had fallen into. Now he’s lifted me up into a firm, secure place and steadied me while I walk along his ascending path."

~ Psalm 40:2 (TPT)

"He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps."

~Psalm 40:2 (NKJV)

There are times when moving forward feels harder than it should. We want to make progress, yet every step seems to require more effort than the last. The weight of uncertainty, disappointment, fear, or hardship can leave us feeling as though we are trudging through thick mud, struggling to find solid footing. That is why the imagery David uses in Psalm 40:2 resonates so deeply. It reflects a reality many people have experienced firsthand.

David takes those familiar struggles and puts them into words. Feelings of being trapped, overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure of what comes next are not unique to our generation. Yet instead of focusing only on the problem, David points us to God's response. Rather than leaving him in the pit, God rescues him, places him on solid ground, and gives him a firm path forward. It is a picture of rescue, stability, and hope that continues to encourage believers today.

Psalm 40 records David's testimony of God's deliverance. The psalm begins with waiting as David patiently cries out to the Lord. Psalm 40:2 is part of that larger testimony. Looking back, David recognizes the faithfulness of the God who heard and answered him.

To incline toward someone means to lean in closely and listen carefully. That gives us a beautiful picture of how God responds when His people call upon Him. God did not turn away from David. He turned toward him and listened to his prayer.

When David talks about “miry clay,” he uses a Hebrew phrase that paints the picture of thick, sticky mud that is extremely difficult to walk through. If you have ever tried moving through deep mud, you know how quickly your footing begins to give way. Your feet slip, sink, and every step becomes more difficult than the one before it. Eventually, it feels as though you have lost your footing altogether, and you can no longer gain traction.

David uses that picture to describe times when life feels unsteady and overwhelming. Spiritually, it can reflect fear, confusion, emotional heaviness, shame, repeated struggles, or painful circumstances that seem to pull a person backward just as they are beginning to regain their footing.

Many people carry that burden longer than they realize. They continue functioning and moving through daily life, yet inwardly they feel unsettled. They are weighed down by things they cannot seem to shake. Some faithfully walk with God yet still struggle to gain traction. Psalm 40:2 gives language to that experience.

What makes this verse so powerful is that God does not leave David in the clay. He does not merely offer comfort while David remains trapped there; He brings him out. God not only meets people in unstable places, but He also has the power to place them on solid ground.

Psalm 40:2 reveals more than God rescuing someone from a difficult place. David's words show that God continues working even after the rescue itself. He brings people out of places that feel desperate and unstable, then begins rebuilding what has been shaken. He gives direction where there was confusion and stability where there was once uncertainty. God does not stop working after the rescue. He restores, strengthens, and continues leading people forward.

That is what makes David's testimony so encouraging. The pit was not the end of his story, and it does not have to be the end of ours. Psalm 40 reminds us that instability does not last forever. God still hears people when they cry out to Him, and He is still able to bring peace and stability into situations that seem impossible. The same God who lifted David out of the miry clay is still rescuing, restoring, and strengthening people today.

Sometimes our first reaction is to try to figure everything out ourselves. We replay situations in our minds, search for answers, and carry burdens that were never meant to rest on our shoulders. We want to know what will happen and how everything will work out. Yet there comes a point when we realize we cannot do it all on our own. That is why Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Even when we cannot see the whole picture, God can. He knows the way forward long before we do.

Psalm 40 reminds us that restoration does not begin with our own strength or our ability to pull ourselves up. It begins with God. He sees the struggles we face and knows the areas where we feel weary, burdened, or overwhelmed. Nothing catches Him by surprise. He understands the weight we have been carrying and the battles we may not even have words for. The beautiful part is that we do not have to face those things alone. When we call out to Him, He draws near. He is not distant or unaware of our pain. He is present, He cares deeply about what we are going through, and He is faithful to meet us right where we are.

When life feels like miry clay, the answer is not found in trying harder through human strength alone. The answer is found in God, who is able to lift people up, restore what has been shaken, and rebuild what feels broken. David's story reminds us that no struggle is beyond God's reach. While we may only see the next step, God sees the entire path ahead. In His time, He guides us forward and establishes our steps.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there any areas of your life right now where you feel as though you are walking through "miry clay" and struggling to gain traction?

  2. What burdens, fears, disappointments, or uncertainties have been weighing heavily on your heart?

  3. Have you been trying to carry a situation on your own rather than fully trusting God with it?

  4. Looking back, can you identify a time when God brought you out of a difficult place and set your feet on a firm foundation?

  5. What would it look like for you to trust God more fully with your current circumstances this week?

  6. How does knowing that God hears your prayers and draws near to you change your perspective on the challenges you are facing today?

  7. What is one practical step you can take this week to seek the Lord and place your trust in Him rather than leaning on your own understanding?

Take a few moments to pray and ask the Lord to reveal any areas where you have lost your footing. Thank Him for His faithfulness, surrender your concerns to Him, and trust that He is able to guide you, establish your steps, and place you on solid ground.
