Guard Your Heart Before the Battle Becomes Division

Over the years, I have witnessed people walk through seasons of obstacles and trials. Some have faced heartbreaking tragedies that led to deep trauma and grief. Many of them were new in their walk with Christ. One of the most beautiful things to witness is the body of Christ surrounding them with love. The church checks on them, prays with them, encourages them, helps meet practical needs, and reminds them to stand firm in their faith. Time after time, I have watched many of those new believers come through those trials victorious.

But I have also witnessed something else.

There are believers who have walked with the Lord for 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years. When trials come, some of them fall apart. They know how to fight spiritually. They have taught others how to overcome. They know the Word of God. They know the promises of God. They know what they should do.

Yet because they have walked with the Lord for so long, shame, pride, or fear of what others may think begins to creep in. Instead of reaching out, they shut down. They isolate themselves. They hide behind a smile and convince themselves they are overcoming when, in reality, they are not.

When we stop surrendering everything to God, bitterness can begin to grow. Resentment, frustration, anger, and irritability slowly take root. If those things are left unchecked, they begin affecting every area of life.

Some continue serving in ministry. Others step back for a season, which can be healthy if it is done to seek healing with the Lord. But if those wounds are never fully surrendered to Him, they leave room for the enemy to gain influence.

What starts as unresolved hurt can slowly spill onto others through negativity, criticism, gossip, judgment, or division. Often, the person does not even realize what is happening. Their spiritual vision becomes clouded, and instead of recognizing the need for repentance, they become convinced that nothing is wrong.

Sadly, attitudes are contagious. Because these are our brothers and sisters in Christ, people naturally trust them. Their words begin influencing others, and before long, a chain reaction begins.

Church, we must guard our hearts.

No matter what you are walking through, keep your eyes on Jesus. There will be days when you are tired. There will be days when you feel weak. But when discouraging thoughts come, take them captive. Stand your ground in Christ.

The enemy comes only to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He does not care how long you have been a Christian or what ministry you serve in. If you are advancing the Kingdom of God, he will oppose you.

Do not give him that victory.

Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–39). If we find ourselves speaking negatively, judging others, gossiping, or allowing offense to take root, we need to stop and examine our hearts before the Lord.

Ask yourself:

“Am I helping others grow closer to Christ, or am I becoming part of the problem?”

If you recognize strife or division, do not feed it. Help bring healing. Seek the root. Pray. Speak truth in love. Be a peacemaker instead of adding to the conflict.

Spiritual warfare is real. The enemy is always looking for an opportunity to bring division among God’s people. Even mature believers can become vulnerable if they stop guarding their hearts.

We cannot allow the enemy to destroy what God is building.

We cannot allow strife, offense, or division to take root simply because someone did not like the correction or counsel they received. We are called to maturity. We are called to humility. We are called to love.

Let us stop comparing ourselves to one another. Stop thinking we are better than someone else. Everything we have is by the grace of God.

Let us stop labeling people.

Let us stop judging people.

Let us stop gossiping.

Those things often begin so subtly. We become comfortable around people we trust, conversations become casual, curiosity grows, and before we know it, we are discussing someone else’s life instead of praying for them. It is an easy trap to fall into if we are not careful.

If you sense even the slightest hardness in your heart, ask God to reveal it. Ask Him to show you where it came from. Repent quickly. Invite the Holy Spirit to soften your heart again.

Pray, “Lord, give me a heart like Yours. Help me see people the way You see them. Teach me to love them the way You love them.”

When each of us keeps our own heart surrendered to Christ, the Church remains strong, unified, and able to fulfill the mission God has given us.
